The Smoothie That Has All of Hollywood Glowing

Kimberly Snyder, clinical nutritionist and author of The Beauty Detox Solution, says a plant-based diet is optimal for clear skin, renewed energy, and weight loss. We asked Kimberly what one food she recommends for weight loss and why, and she suggested her signature recipe for the Glowing Green Smoothie.
Kimberly explains all the benefits of her Glowing Green Smoothie and why it is a big hit among her clients:

"In one delicious drink, we get the fuel to not only lose weight, but rejuvenate our skin, fight aging, and increase our energy. It's so easy, it's so simple, and it has worked for all my clients, from Hollywood stars to busy moms and schoolteachers.
I often work as the nutritionist on different movie sets, and this amazing thing happens when I do: I start making the Glowing Green Smoothie, and the next thing you know, you look around, and all the actors and directors and producers are drinking it every day, because they love the way it makes them feel."

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups water
1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped
3 to 4 stalks organic celery
1/2 head of a large bunch or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach
1 organic apple, cored and chopped
1 organic pear, cored and chopped
1 organic banana
Juice of 1/2 fresh organic lemon
Optional: 1/3 bunch organic cilantro (stems OK) and 1/3 bunch organic parsley (stems OK)

Directions

Made up of about 70 percent green vegetables and 30 percent fruit, this smoothie helps you eat far more greens than you ordinarily could. Because we blend the greens and fruit for easy digestion, your body is able to absorb more of the vitamins and minerals without working so hard. Thanks to all its nutrients and fiber, the smoothie is incredibly filling, so it keeps you from reaching for that midmorning second cup of coffee and that bagel you really didn't want to eat.
  1. Add water and chopped head of romaine to blender. Blend at a low speed until smooth.
  2. Add spinach, celery, apple, and pear, and blend at high speed.
  3. Add cilantro and parsley (which help chelate heavy metals from your body).
  4. Finish with banana and lemon.

The Number 1 Bad Habit You Need to Break

Kimberly Snyder might just be the queen of detox. Not only does she have practically all of Hollywood sipping on her Glowing Green Smoothie, but she also just released a new book, The Beauty Detox Power ($19), to address the more emotional aspects of what it means to detox. In fact, she believes in how your emotional state helps or hinders weight loss so much that she wants you to stop a habit that's common among many women. If you do, you'll see weight-loss results even faster, Kimberly promises.
Your new mission? Stop with the negative talk if you want to lose weight. It may sound like it won't be effective, but Kimberly's reason for wanting you to stop body shaming yourself in order to see the pounds drop actually has scientific heft. "Most people don't even realize what they're saying to themselves, and most people only think that the only factors that affect their weight are what they're eating and how they're working out," Kimberly said. In fact, studies have shown that your thoughts matter when it comes to your waistline. Kimberly points to a Harvard study that followed 84 cleaning women; half were told that their physically demanding jobs met the requirements for exercise as set by the Surgeon General, while the other half weren't given any information about their activity level and calorie burn. After a month, researchers found that the group of women who were told that what they were doing was good for them lost body fat, waist-to-hip ratio, and BMI — even though they hadn't changed anything about their actual physical habits or altered their diets at all. The other group, on the other hand, didn't lose any weight. "Your thoughts are nutrition in the way that food is," Kimberly explained about the study results. "Your mind really has a big part in shaping your body. If you keep saying to yourself, 'It's so hard for me to lose weight, I'm just going to gain it back,'" then you aren't setting yourself up for success.
Kimberly's advice to stop with the "I'm fat" talk can be easier said than done, especially in a world of constant online judgment and photoshopped images of the "ideal" woman. Even Kimberly herself admits that she used to participate in casual body bashing when with friends. But knowing that thoughts can affect actual change should help you nix the habit, she says. "It's just a shift in listening to what you're saying," she advised. "Stop saying negative things about your body, whether it's out loud or in your head. It's the first important thing" if you want to lose weight.

Lazy-Girl's workout

Can't seem to make it to the gym these days?
Stop with the excuses, and let these 20 lazy-girl-approved tips keep you on track all season long.

1.Keep it short:  Always opt for a short and intense workout over a longer one where you don't push yourself. HIIT it, then quit it.

2.Get it out of the way:  Start your day with a workout so you don't have a chance to skip it later. This one is great for all the procrastinating lazy ladies out there.

3.Two birds, one stone:  Cardio and strength training don't have to happen separately. Combine them in one workout like this 30-minute printable for a killer workout.

4.Hit the floor:  Yes, you can lie on the floor and still get an awesome workout. These lazy-girl-approved moves are proof.

5.Double TV time:  Your commercial breaks are mini workouts that add up after an hour or two of your favorite shows. Try this three-minute workout the next time you want to binge on the tube.

6.Socialize:  Grab friends for your next class. Scheduling a fitness date will make you more likely to stick with the game plan. No one likes to bail on someone they love.

7.Pack up early:  Get your gear ready to go the night before your workout. That way you don't have to rush around right before your workout . . . or end up skipping it altogether.

8.Change your commute:  Ride your bike or walk for a portion or all of your commute. Makings things active will help you burn calories and keep you off public transportation for as long as possible.

9.Multitask the mundane:  You can always sneak in some exercise. Move through calf raises when you're standing in a long line or waiting for the bus, and move through this two-minute workout you can do while brushing your teeth.

10.Enjoy your snack:  The right pre-workout snack can fuel you up for better performance at your next workout. Try one of these and enjoy.

11.Go slow:  You don't have to look like the Energizer Bunny during every workout. Turn up the resistance, slow things down, and you'll feel the burn big-time.

12.Drink up:  More water helps your body burn more fat, and being properly hydrated improves your workout performance. Sip on H2O all day long.

13.Make it routine:  When your workout feels like second nature, you won't be as tempted to skip it. Keep your routine consistent every week, and start feeling results.

14.Lift a little:  If you're all cardio and no strength training, you're not going to see the changes you're after. These beginner-friendly dumbbell exercises are a great place to start.

15.Go for 10:  Even if you're not going to commit to a full workout, take 10 minutes and work out with one of these videos. Short workouts still count!

16.Stay caffeinated:  Too tired to hit the gym? Turn up with a few sips of coffee or green tea. You'll get your energy back on track, and caffeine has been linked to better workout performance.

17.Cruise your feed:  Start following fitness stars like Kayla Itsines and Hannah Bronfman, who will fill up your Instagram feed with a ton of motivation. It's hard not to want to work out after looking at these ladies!

18.Hire outside help:  Sign up for boutique classes with an awesome instructor, or hire a personal trainer for a handful of sessions at the gym. They'll keep you on track and revitalize your routine.

20.Stay in bed:  You need those seven to nine hours every night to keep you energized throughout the day and during your workout — just another good excuse to linger a little longer.
